چکیده

In this work we study morphological methods to reduce the amount of redundant points in the Skeleton representation of images. The advantage of removing redundant points using morphological operations only, lies in the computational eeciency of these operations, when implemented on parallel machines. We present a generic approach to obtain redundancy-reduced Skeletons, which yields morphological closed formulae to obtain a Skeleton with less redundant points than the regular one. Although not yet able to completely remove the redundancy in the general case, the generic approach is shown to provide a redundancy-free representation, for a particular important case. We also derive, from the generic approach, a morphological formula to obtain the Essential Points of the Skeleton, which are points that cannot be removed from the Skeleton without aaecting the error-free characteristic of the representation.

Skeleton Redundancy Reduction Based on a Generalization of Convexity

We present a generalization of the concept of Convex Sets, based on the Morphological Closing operation, and study some of its properties. We also deene Extreme Points of such Generalized Convex Sets, which generalize the notion of Extreme Points of Convex Sets. Moreover, we apply the above notions to skeleton redundancy removal, and present an algorithm for obtaining an Error-Free Skeleton rep...

Artery Skeleton Extraction Using Topographic and Connected Component Labeling

In this paper, we propose a novel method for the extraction of coronary artery skeletons (centerlines) by analyzing the topographic features of coronary angiogram images. Initially, the angiogram is pre-processed for noise reduction and artery enhancement through directional morphological filtering. The topographic features of the resulting image are detected based on first and second-order ima...

Morphological skeleton representation and coding of binary images

This paper presents the results of a study on the use of morphological set operations to represent and encode a discrete binary image by parts of its skeleton, a thinned version of the image containing complete information about its shape and size. Using morphological erosions and openings, a finite image can be uniquely decomposed into a finite number of skeleton subsets and then the image can...

Binary shape recognition using the morphological skeleton transform

-Binary image representation by its morphological skeleton transform has been proposed in the past as an information preserving representation. In this paper this skeleton representation is adopted as the start point for the development of a binary shape recognition scheme. A skeleton matching algorithm is presented that efficiently characterizes the similarity between two skeletons as a distan...

Shape Representation: Comparison between the Morphological Skeleton and Morphological Shape Decomposition

The morphological skeleton and morphological shape decomposition (MSD) are the two popular approaches for morphological shape representation. Each method represents an object as the union of a number of components, where each component is given by a locus of points dilated by a speciied structuring element homothetic. Anecdotal evidence suggests that for many objects, an MSD-based representatio...
